How does a school start AI classes for Class 5–10?

Start with one age band, one period a week, for a term. Not a whole-school rollout, and not a launch event.

The constraint that decides whether this works is almost never budget or student interest. It is teacher time and timetable space, and both are far easier to test with fifty students than to unwind across eight hundred.

Why one cohort first

A pilot answers the questions a proposal cannot. Does the period actually hold? Does the teacher find it manageable in a normal week? Do the students in the weakest section keep up, or only the strongest?

It also changes the internal conversation. A principal arguing for a programme is making a case; a principal showing what one cohort produced last term is reporting a result. The second is considerably easier.

And if it does not work, one cohort is a term of one teacher's time. A whole-school rollout that fails costs the credibility of the next thing you try.

Where it fits in the timetable

Most schools have no free period, which is the honest starting point. In practice the workable slots are the computer period, the library period, or an activity slot — places where something is already scheduled that this can partly replace rather than something that has to be created.

Short sessions matter more than they sound. A programme needing a double period competes with subjects that will win; one that fits inside a normal period can be absorbed.

Decide the slot before you decide the provider. It narrows the field usefully.

The teacher question

Whoever runs this will be a teacher who already has a full load. That is the reality every school starts from, and a programme that ignores it gets quietly dropped by March.

So the question is not who is most enthusiastic about AI. It is what the programme asks of whoever ends up with it — preparation time, subject knowledge, and what happens on the day they are absent.

Pick the teacher for the slot rather than the subject. A computer teacher is the obvious choice, but a librarian or an activity coordinator with a free period often works better than an overloaded specialist.

What the first term should produce

Something you can show. Student projects, however small, are worth more than any completion statistic when you present to management or parents.

Per-student data too: who attended, who passed, who submitted. Not because the numbers are impressive in term one, but because being able to produce them at all is what makes the programme defensible.

And an honest teacher debrief. The person who ran it knows within a term whether it is sustainable, and they will tell you if asked directly.
